Three Int'l research centers to establish at Taipei Tech

In order to emphasize the importance of teaching field as well as assist universities to stand out in the world, the Ministry of Education allocates resources to initiate the Higher Education Deep Plowing Project in 2018. Estimated NT$ 4.4 billion will be poured in higher education institutes.

Taipei Tech received approximately NT$ 278 million subsidies from the foregoing project and is expected to set up three international research centers, including Additive Manufacturing Center for Mass Customization Production, Smart Textile Technology Research Center, and Research Center of Energy Conservation for New Generation of Residential, Commercial, and Industrial Sectors. Below we are going to give some basic introduction of these three centers.

Additive Manufacturing Center for Mass Customization Production

Additive manufacturing is commonly known as 3D printing by people. The feature of Additive Manufacturing Center for Mass Customization Production is to apply intelligent measurement technique to 3D printing. By doing so, we can make unique item for customer in a mass production process. So far the center has already conducted many successful academia-industry cooperation cases such as customized artificial teeth and shoe pad. A bigger market is necessity goods. If the center can get in mass market, the potential value will be much higher. Take shoe industry for example, the estimated revenue for NIKE and Adidas is more than NT$ 50 billion per year according to the center.

Smart Textile Technology Research Center

As the largest functional textile producing country in the world, Taiwan produced functional textile that is worth over NT$ 300 billion in 2016. Wrinkle-resistant, flexible, and breathable fabrics are the trends in smart textile industry. The Smart Textile Technology Research Center focuses on the above crucial technologies behind making multi-functional textile. Many famous brands such as “Victoria’s Secret” and “lululemon” are using the R&D result from Coating Process and Material R&D Center, predecessor of Smart Textile Technology Research Center, in their products.

Research Center of Energy Conservation for New Generation of Residential, Commercial, and Industrial Sectors

Over 40% of electricity consumption for a building contributes to air-conditioning system, according to Bureau of Energy, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Taiwan. Therefore, how to use the electricity mentioned more efficiently is a key to energy conservation. Taipei Tech’s Research Center of Energy Conservation for New Generation of Residential, Commercial, and Industrial Sectors tackles this problem from various angels including building a more efficient air-conditioning system, online energy consumption data platform, intelligent control technology, and insulation for green building, and so on. The center gathers more than 30 specialists from academia, industry, and government both nationally and globally. To assist in solving Taiwan’s electricity supply gap and increase in electricity generation is another important goal for the center.
