At the awards ceremony of the “20th · 2025 Compassion Award,” the highest honor in the global Chinese philanthropic community, Charles Liang, a National Taipei University of Technology (Taipei Tech) alumnus, demonstrated remarkable philanthropic influence. Liang, a Taipei Tech honorary doctorate recipient and founder of Supermicro, was named a recipient of the award. Witnessed by Compassion Award founder Tian-Maw Lin and Intai Technology President Pao-Chang Lin, both Taipei Tech honorary doctorate recipients, he conveyed to the world the spirit of the Taipei Tech community: “serving the nation through technology and giving back through public welfare.”
The Green Gene of the “Godfather of AI”: From Green Computing to Tree Planting in the Sahara
Charles Liang is an alumnus of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Taipei Institute of Technology (the predecessor of Taipei Tech). He is widely known as the “Godfather of AI Servers.” He pointed out that achieving green computing through high-efficiency power supplies and “Make IT Green” has always been Supermicro’s core philosophy. “When we design all our products, we uphold this DNA—saving energy, reducing carbon emissions, and helping the Earth reduce pollution.”
The jury highly praised his efforts in giving back through technology. Charles Liang has not only donated the most advanced GPU server systems multiple times to support his alma mater’s scientific research, but has also supported the planting of more than 2 million trees in the Sahara Desert. These saplings serve as “green vanguards” that curb desertification while improving the local microclimate and creating economic opportunities for nearby villages. They demonstrate how technological power can address global environmental challenges while delivering both ecological protection and livelihood improvement.

Passing the Torch: A Philanthropic Ecosystem Built by Taipei Tech Alumni
The twenty-year history of the Compassion Award originates from Mr. Tian-Maw Lin, a Taipei Tech honorary doctorate recipient and founder of the Hong Kong & Macau Taiwanese Charity Fund. Senior alumnus Lin established the award in 2006, guided by the pragmatic spirit of “Small acts of compassion can grow into boundless compassion” and “Take from here, give back here.” He developed the platform into an internationally influential hall of philanthropy with prize funding of up to US$200,000.
At the ceremony, Taipei Tech honorary doctorate recipient and President of Intai Technology, Pao-Chang Lin, was also present as a presenter, embodying the tradition of “senior alumni guiding junior alumni and alumni supporting alumni.” Over the years, President Lin has strongly sponsored and participated in the Compassion Award, working alongside founder Tian-Maw Lin to nurture charitable heroes and build a philanthropic ecosystem unique to Taipei Tech alumni.
University Recognition: A Warm Current of Public Good Flowing from Campus to the World
Taipei Tech President Yi-Jun Jen stated that after reaching the pinnacle of achievement in their professional fields, alumni still care for the disadvantaged and devote themselves to global environmental protection, serving as the finest role models for younger students. From the 13th award recipient Susie Chien (charity vocalist and wife of Everlight Electronics Chairman Yin-Fu Yeh, a Taipei Tech honorary doctorate recipient), to the 15th recipient Wen-Cheng Shen (Chairman of Topkey Corporation and also an honorary doctorate recipient of Taipei Tech), and now to this year’s recipient Charles Liang, this warm current of public welfare originating from Taipei Tech continues to spread through the platform of the Compassion Award—from the campus to society, and from Taiwan to the world.
