Taipei Tech voluntary teaching project helped children gain confidence

“I don’t have to stay at the corner of the classroom alone anymore” said Yu-Ting Lin, a fifth-grader at Tong-An Elementary School, Pingtung. Yu-Ting used to spend a lot of spare time correcting homework rather than playing with her classmates because she couldn’t keep up with rest of her peers. A bit of shy and lack of interaction, Yu-Ting gradually found that there was a gap between others and her. But things changed after Taipei Tech student, Jia-Jia(pseudonym), came into her life.

Jia-Jia is a volunteer student in Taipei Tech’s student club that aims to help pupil in remote areas. Yu-Ting said that she thought Jia-Jia is interesting and relaxing to talk to since the first time they met online. Jia-Jia was not only an instructor but a playmate to Yu-Ting. Despite they only interact through internet, Yu-Ting still felt Jia-Jia’s enthusiasm. Since having Jia-Jia helping out with her school assignment, Yu-Ting now has more time hanging out with her friends. Moreover, Yu-Ting’s self-esteem elevated so much that she has the courage to go on stage by herself.

Taipei Tech values students’ empathy and spirit of service. By encourage student to engage online tutoring with various remote elementary schools, Taipei Tech hopes that these college students can not only teach children knowledge but also learn from them.
