Worldskills 2019 took place in Kazan, Russia, where Taiwan’s student professionals rank 4th out of the 63 participating countries by receiving 5 golds, 5 silvers, 5 bronze, and 23 medallions of excellence. Among these distinguished professionals, Ting-Yu Yang stands out as the best professional by winning a gold medal in car painting.

Yang is currently a junior student majoring in vehicle engineering at Taipei Tech. Her interest in car painting was triggered after she entered BMW Taiwan as a technician in her sophomore. She then began learning to do it under the support of BMW Taiwan.

It only took her one year and a half to win herself a gold. A gold medal, however, was never in her plan as she prepared for the competition since she merely set an easier goal which is to win a medallion of excellence. She was more than excited as the gold medal winner was announced.

The key factor to the win, she said, could lie in the rules of the game. Different from the past, the Car Painting in the Worldskills turned into a blind contest in which the topic was remained unveiled until the competitors enter the competition. As a technician working in a car company that has to cater to the needs of all kinds of customers every day, she takes the blind contest as customer service in the industry.

Car painting was, or is, considered a male preserve, but she has never had to tackle any major problem resulted from gender disparity. Instead, the heedfulness and the color sense of hers are considered advantageous to her work. She was neither thought of as inferior to the male colleagues nor ostracized when learning new skills from colleagues and supervisors. Only the stereotype toward the industry may cause some minor inconvenience when she needs to walk farther to find a female restroom at her workplace.

For the future, Yang said, she will pertain to the vehicle industry. The short-term goal is to concentrate on her schoolwork and meanwhile contemplate the possibilities of her career ahead.
