Twenty world of renowned scholars with specialties in nano material characterisation,
solid state physical, theoretical solid state physics,
physical metallurgy and materials science and structural characterization of quasicrystals.

The National Taipei University of Technology (TAIPEI TECH) has been organizing the 2012 International Quasicrystals Conference since last year. The moment was to celebrate the 100th anniversary of TAIPEI TECH, but also the 30th anniversary of the discovery of Quasicrystals. TAIPEI TECH had chosen to celebrate these events by inviting the father of the Quasicrystals field, Prof. Dan Shechtman, even before his Nobel Laureate in 2011. However, the Nobel Prize added considerable prestige to the conference.

For three days, twenty prestigious world scholars in the field of Quasicrystals gathered at TAIPEI TECH to exchange their ideas on this extraordinary crystalline structure. In addition, they also discussed possible practical applications with potential commercial implications. Respected scholars from Australia, America, Germany, French, India, Israel, Japan, Netherland, Sweden and Switzerland, including Prof. Sven Lidin, the Chairman of Nobel Committee for Chemistry were present as well as the Co-author of the first Quasicrystals thesis released in 1984 with Prof. Shechtman, Prof. Denis Gratias, and our excellent alumnus of TAIPEI TECH, Prof. An-Pang, Tsai who promoted this International Conference and the professor of Tohoku University.

Prof. Shechtman attributed his success at winning the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to the scholars who have dedicated themselves to the research and attended this conference. He also expressed his desire to persist with the research in the hope of making even more fruitful discoveries.

The scene in the International Conference Hall of Taipei Tech was almost surreal. Through this conference, the scene that can only be dreamed of was now presented in the faculty and students of TAIPEI TECH experienced an authentic insight into the glamour world of renowned scholars, but witnessed an international conference in operation.

The scholars were accompanied by TAIPEI TECH professors to the research centers, laboratories, and the History Museum of TAIPEI TECH. They were astonished by the transformation TAIPEI TECH has undergone since 1912 and were left with a remarkable impression of TAIPEI TECH and of Taiwan. Consequently, twenty scholars have agreed to become international chair professors of TAIPEI TECH after the Quasicrystals conference.
