I took the college entrance examination in 1968 and was admitted to the three-year program in the Department of Electrical Engineering. Till this day, I still get emotional when I reminisce my days as a student here. I still remember Prof. Jinshen Chang, the head of our department, who taught us DC, Prof. Zhezhi Fan, who gave us lectures on AC, Prof. Linzhao Hseh on EMC, Prof. Rontang Wei on principles of electrical engineering, Prof. Guangchao Zhen, who lead us through the practical courses, Prof. Zhenyin Shi on electric distribution, Prof. Shi Wang on automation, Prof. Jinhuei Zhou on industrial electronics, and also Prof. Bingyi Niu and Minlun Zhao, who taugh us PE, and our Chinese teacher Prof. Yunxiang Li and English teacher Prof. Yunjin Chang. What's important is that the forty-six classmates are all contributing their knowledge in all walks of life; such as in the Taiwan Power Company, telecommunication and EE, plumbing, and education. Though living in the remote area of Taidong, I cherish every opportunity to meet up with the old schoolmates. I hereby salute all those who have battled with us in the football pit, or the volleyball courts, or on the PingPong table. I especially missed Yingren Gao from the Dept. of Chemistry and also all from my class fought alongside with me in the Freshmen Cup Tournament. Sweet are those memories!
The most unforgettable thing is that the calipers we used were marked "Purchased 1950" -- which was the year I was born in! A lot of the facilities and equipments for practical courses were antique. But, that also showed that the virtue of frugality is passed down through generations of students. Student from as early as the days of School of Industrial Instruction, to the State Taipei School of Industry era, to the golden age of Provincial Taipei Vocation School of Industry and then to National Taipei Vocational School of Industry, Nation Taipei Institute of Technology, to the present day National Taipei University of Technology have always been hardworking and diligent, industriously contributing to society and upholding the honors of their alma mater.
Taidong is a city with virtually no industrial businesses. Aside from those working in Taiwan Power Company, Chunghwa Telecom, or other small-scale mechanic shops, there's no job market for engineers. Therefore, the majority of Taidong alumni do not work here. Several years back, I tried to establish an alumni association. But due the fact that our location is both remote and vast, the progress of setting up the association has not been satisfactory. Taidong is a beautiful place with amazing sceneries. I wish alumni who return to our hometown would make use of the platform that I've set up to keep in touch with each other.
