NTUT Gazette, No.31 January , 2011 By Jiang Zhi-Han, Department of Energy and
Refrigerating Air-Conditioning Engineering ; translated by Taipei Tech Gazette Executive Editors

Second NTUT PV Forum opened and concluded with success on October 27th. It was organized by Research and Development Center, MOE Industry and University Cooperation Program for 3C Industry, College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and Department of Energy and Refrigerating Air-conditioning Engineering along with its alumni association and supervised by Bureau of Energy, Ministry of Economic Affairs. Approximately 600 people registered in the forum. On the day of the event, around 500 people from the industrial, governmental, and academic circles participated (shown in picture one). This number shows that Taiwan’s effort to build a low-carbon and energy-conservative society has already rooted deeply in people’s hearts. With the advancement of time and development, the concept of energy conservation is no longer a slogan, but a movement in progress.

In the process of preparing for the forum, congratulatory messages were received form president Ma Ying-Jeou, Premier Wu Den-Yih, Chairperson of DPP Tsai Ing-Wen, and numerous legislators and city councilors. This shows that the forum is thought highly by the government and opposing party.

Invited to give a speech in the forum were Director of the Department of Technological and Vocational Education Lin Teng-Jiao (林騰蛟), Deputy Mayor of Taipei City Government Lin Chien-Yuan (林建元), Director of the Division of Energy Technology, Bureau of Energy, Ministry of Economic Affairs Su Jin-Sheng (蘇金勝), Legislator Tu Sing-Jhe (涂醒哲) and Tian Ciou-Jin(田秋菫), City Councilors Li Keng Kuei-Fang (厲耿桂芳), Xu Jia-Qing (徐佳青), and Zhou Boya (周柏雅), Director-general of the National Association of Electrical Electricians Jiang Chang-Shu (江長樹), Chief Committee Member of the Environment and Energy Committee of Chinese Institute of Engineers Chen Long-Ji (陳龍吉), Chairman of Ablerex Co. Chen You’an (陳友安), and president of NTUT Lee Tsu-Tian (李祖添). Panelists included Chairman of the College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Lin Chii-Ruey (林啟瑞), Director Chuah Yew-Khoy (蔡尤溪) and Chang Yung-Chung (張永宗). Project leader Prof. Wang Chang-Chun (王長春) presided over the forum.

Our president Lee delivered a speech at the beginning of the forum to thank distinguished guests for coming and gracing the forum. Director Lin said in his speech that people should constantly remind themselves to save energy to sustain the life of Earth because the resources on Earth were limited. In this way, we could create a better living environment in the future. Deputy mayor Lin thought that since long ago the problems caused by the shortage of food, manpower, and resources have continued to haunt mankind despite the changes in climate and society. Consequently, the forum held by NTUT spells out a message which is consistent with future social development and energy-conservation measures. It is indeed one of the significant issues which people cannot ignore.

Legislator Tu mentioned that the forum held by NTUT this time was the largest PV-related forum in Taiwan. It can not only direct Taiwan toward developing industries using renewable energies but also alleviate climate change by exploiting renewable energies. Legislator Tian also recognized the green-energy industries promoted by the Taiwanese government because it could solve the problem of scare resources. City Councilor Li Keng, Xu, and Zhou together referred to the development of solar optoelectronic industry. They believed that it could be applied in all fields all over the world in the future. They also hoped that the government could be active in assisting integration. It was also their common belief that Taiwan’s renewable-energy industry would be second to none in the future.

From the speeches of guests, we can see that the development of solar optoelectronic industry is one of the methods to solve the problem of insufficient resources. Yet, most important of all, the government should promote and assist the development of the optoelectronic industry. Moreover, people should reflect on their ways of living in order to realize the motto “energy conservation and carbon reduction” so that the life of Earth can be sustained and a better tomorrow can be created for mankind.
