U-pants: designed by students from the Department of Industrial Design

Many long-term care patients have to carry a urine bag with themwhen going about their daily chores. The urine bags are a source of embarrassment and often prevent patients from going outdoors as the urine bag is exposed and seen by everyone. In attempt toredress this issue, the Department of Industrial Design at Taipei Tech cooperated with the Taipei Veterans General Hospital to develop "U-pants", a pair of specially designed pants that keeps the urine bag inside the pants and out of sight of onlookers. "U-pants" look just like any normal pants from the outside.

Designed by Jun Qi Wu, Bo Ren Yang, Guan Hao Pan, Jun Yi Chang, and He Lu Su, students from the Department of Industrial Design, "U-pants" was awarded Bronze in Industrial Design Excellence Award and Design Concept in Red Dot Award 2015.

Eric Fan, associate professor from the Department of Industrial Design at Taipei Tech, notes that patient can change the urine bag if it got dirty. A zipper on the side of the pants allows the wearer to get in and out of the trousers with ease.

The volume of the "U-pants" is 750 cc., and it has a marked scale that enables patients to check on the volume anytime.

Mao Chang Chen, head of the nursing department at Taipei Veterans General Hospital Su-Ao&Yuanshan Branch, notes that among the 2000 beds in the hospital, 1000 of them are long-term care beds. With the present urine bag design, patients would rather stay in bed instead of leaving their rooms. After trying the "U-pants" for a while, many patients are more willing to go out of their rooms and even venture to convenience stores nearby.
